Expanding My Tea Horizons January 4, 2011

Over the holidays, I was gifted with a lovely Tea Pot from Teavana.

A black cast iron pot and warmer bearing the image of a Chinese Dragon symbolizing power, strength and good fortune.

Along with the tea pot I was given varies types of White Tea which included: Youthberry White Tea

Ingredients: White tea, candied mango pieces (mango, sugar), candied pineapple pieces (pineapple, sugar), rosehip peels, apple bits, hibiscus flowers, red currants, flavoring, rose petals and acai fruit powder (acai, maltodextrin). This tea is Gluten-free.

This tea is fruity and refreshing and It has become one of my favorite teas to drink. Now this is a big deal coming from a hardcore tradition Indian Chai drinker!  These two teas are like night and day.

What I love is that this tea is not only tasty but White Tea is one best types of teas to drink!

White Tea is filled with the most antioxidants of all teas and has the least amount of caffeine.  Antioxidants are nutrients that protect the body from damage by free radicals. Free radicals wreak havoc on your body, damaging DNA and accelerating aging. Antioxidants isolate and neutralize free radicals.  Free radicals actually speed up our body’s aging so the less free radicals in our system the more gracefully our body will age.

And on a side note:  Because White tea is loaded with these protective nutrients, it  also aids in helping the body regulate weight and even speed up metabolism!!!

I’ve been drinking white tea for about 4 weeks straight now and I can definitely notice a decrease in my acne breakouts. I’ve also cut down on my sugar intake. I believe those two changes have caused a positive shift in my skin.

I’m pleased.

Organic Raw Honey Coconut Oil Mask and Chickpea Flour Exfoliant January 3, 2011

This weekend I realized that parts of my forehead and nose were getting dry patches and they appeared to be spreading. I wanted to do an OCM treatment but I know from past experience my entire face does not respond well to OCM. The last time I tried the OCM method I used castor oil and grapeseed oil and I had mixed results. My forehead loved it but my cheeks HATED IT. So I put off doing more treatments until I could come up with a solution.

For the past 5 months I have been washing my face exclusively with organic raw honey and toning the oily spots with Apple Cider vinegar and treating my dry spots with Coconut Oil.


I put coconut oil on the dry patch after I’ve washed with honey and while my skin still damp. I like leaving the honey on my face while I brush my teeth or take my shower. I am so impressed with how the coconut oil works on my dry patches and I’m convinced that its helped to prevent me from having a full Dermatitis episode. My face is clear and soft without breakouts.

Since the weather has been very cold and harsh, my skin has been more dry and patchy than normal and I need to do something more to keep moisture in. I decided to mix the honey and coconut oil together and leave on my dry spots for about 10 mins and then to reduce the greasy build-up left behind and to remove any dead skin cells I exfoliated with chickpea flower.

I’d never used chickpea flour before alone as an exfoliant because I thought it was to mild to have any real impact on my skin, boy was I wrong. Chickpea flour is very mild but it does a wonderful job exfoliating skin.

After I finished rinsing the product off my face, I treated the dry patches again with Coconut Oil and the oily part of my skin with Apple Cider Vinegar.

Simple Honey Coconut Mask and Chickpea flour Exfoliant

2-3 Tablespoons of Organic Raw Honey
1 tablespoon of Organic Coconut Oil
1-2 teaspoons of Chickpea flour

Standard Use:

Mix honey and oil together and smooth on damp face. Leave on for 10-15 mins.
Damp face again with lukewarm water and gently rub skin in an upward circular motion with chickpea flour
Rince off product with lukewarm water and then splash face with cool water to close pores.

Follow with toner and moisturizer.

The results: smooth moisturized skin!

This will be a staple in my winter  skin care regime.

 

Flaxseed Gel January 2, 2011

Flaxseed Gel

Flax seed Gel is the only gel that actually works for my hair.  I’ve tried all gels from:  EcoStyler to IciFantasia to no name brands and nothing holds my twist better than my all natural homemade concoction. This recipe always give my hair a nice medium hold, without my hair becoming  hard or flaky.  And best of all — it’s all natural!!!

Flaxseed Gel Recipe

One Cup of Flaxseeds

Two Cups of Water

Plastic bowl

Plastic tongs

1 Cheap thin Nylon (works better in my opinion than strainer)

2 tablespoons of Castor Oil

2 teaspoons of Aragon Oil (I used pure oil– not the mixture you get @ some beauty supply stores) if you don’t have Aragon oil you can also use Jojoba Oil.

2 tablespoons of Aloe Vera Juice

5 drops of Vitamin E

10 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil

10 drops of Sage Essential Oil

7 drops of Tea Tree Oil Essential Oil

7 drops of Basil Essential Oil

7 drops of Ylang Ylang Essential Oil (or your Favorite EO)

5 drops of Rosewood Essential Oil  (or your Favorite EO)

7 drops of Lemongrass Essential Oil  (or your Favorite EO)

Directions: Combine Flaxseeds and water in pot and boil. Continue to boil until mucus of flaxseeds is at a consistency of gel (or to your personal preference).

Strain gel into bowl. Carefully pour mixture into bowl. Remove nylon stocking from rim of bowl and use tongs to gently push gel through stocking and into bowl.  Once gel in bowl add all other ingredients!  Refrigerate when not using.

Feel free to add or delete ingredients to make gel to your personal liking!
